Suicide Attempt Failed 3 times Shell Indicates

Investigation by the Yuba county coroner's office into the death of John Issac Watson, 39-year-old Oliverhurst agricultural laborer, who committed suicide in the rear of his home about 12:30 p.m. yesterday, disclosed he had
tried to shoot himself four times before he finally succeeded.

Warren Hutchings, Yuba County deputy coroner, said a loaded .16 gauge shotgun shell which had misfired three times was found in his pocket, leading officers to believe that after the first shell did not explode, he tried to shoot himself four times before he finally succeeded.

In a suicide note found in the house later in the afternoon, Watson, the father of four children, assumed all responsibility for his death. Scrawled in pencil on a scrap of paper, the unpunctuated note read: "My wifes people
had nothing to do with this it was my fault Bud.

Officers said Watson was believed to have been despondent as a result of his being unemployed for about four weeks.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 pm. in Hutchinson's Colonial chapel. A native of Arkansas, Watson had resided in this area for 18 years, making his home on 10th Ave., Oliverhurst.

His survivors include his wife, Josephine; one son, John Watson Jr.; and three daughters, Patricia Ann, Shirley Jean, and Sandra Lea, all of Oliverhurst.

In addition, he leaves his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. William Jr. Ezell, his father, John Watson, and a brother, J. D. Watson, all of Oliverhurst. Other relatives include two brothers, Noble and Ernest Watson, both of Delano; and two sisters, Mrs. Eva Fulfur of Sutter county and

Oliverhurst Man Commits Suicide

John Isaac Watson, 41, father of four children, killed himself with a shotgun at 12:20 p.m. today in an outhouse at the rear of his home on 10th Ave., Oliverhurst.

His wife, Mrs. Josephine Watson, said he had been despondent after being out of work for several weeks.

Sheriff John R. Dower and the Yuba county coroner's office investigated the shooting and reported that Watson died from wounds suffered after discharge of a shotgun placed against his neck.

Watson lived with his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. William J. Ezell, at the Oliverhurst residence.

About noon he took the gun and shells from his room and went outdoors. Shortly, afterward Mr. and Mrs. Watson heard a gunshot. They found Watson dead.

Besides his mother and wife, survivors, are four children, John Jr, 8, Patricia Ann, 4; Shirley Jean, 2 1/2, and Sandra, six months old; and his father, John Watson who lives at Rt. 1, Marysville.

Death Takes Two Erath Pioneers
by Rufus F. Higgs
Two Erath county pioneers, both prominent in their respective fields of activities, died the past week. A. K. (Bud) Wylie was buried at Exray Wednesday of last week while services for Prof. Harry J. McIIhany were held here Sunday afternoon.
Mr. Wylie was a typical stock man and in that endeavor he was unwavering in the law of the Old West. what Bud Wylie promised he would do: he never sacrificed any principal and was at all times found on the side of the right. His holdings were located north of the present village of Huckabay, on Barton Creek, where he lived most of his life.
Prof. McIIhany was of a different type but just as strong in his character and belief in right living. For may years he had made his home in Marlin where he was associated with the public schools until his health failed a few years ago.
He died in that city, Thursday of last week.
WYLIE FROM PIONEER FAMILY
Funeral services for Mr. Wylie were held at the Trewitt Chapel Wednesday afternoon of last week, following his death January 26 th. Rev. L. E. Barrett officiated. burial was at Exray cemetery that afternoon where brief graveside services were conducted.
Born at Thorp Spring in 1868, Mr. Wylie came to Erath county; when a small child. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. J. N. M. Wylie, large land owners in Hood; Erath, Taylor, Runnels, and other Texas counties. The Barton Creek ranch of Mr. Wylie was a part of the property that was at one time owned by Wylie Bros., his forbears. He never left that part of the county, living a quiet life on land that he loved. Exray was in the early days known as Wylieville where the family had an active part in all the affairs of that community.
In 1890, he married to Miss Louella Fulfer. They were the parents of thirteen children and ten of them survive. Mrs. Wylie died in 1944. The children are John, Dick, Pink, Victor and Cage, all of Stephenville; Buddie Cotton, Calif; Kelsey, Dallas; Henry, Hobbs, New Mexico; Mrs. Elizabeth Cates, Stephenville and Mrs. Jewell Miller, Ranger. There are also 19 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild and two sister, Mrs. Pearl Cage, Stephenville, and Mrs. Mollie Abernathy, Lubbock.
After news of Mr. Wylie's death was received on the streets of Stephenville the frequent remarks among his friends was that "no better man ever lived than Bud Wylie." That same feeling was expressed by friends and neighbors in the Exray country where he lived so long.

Mrs. A. K. Wylie Dies in Hospital At Ranger, Nov. 13
News of the death of Mrs. Mollie Fulfer Wylie, wife of A. K. Wylie of the Exray community, brought heartache to many Erath county friends, and deepest mourning to her family to whom she was always very dear.
Suffering from ill health over a period of several years, Mrs. Wylie had been conveyed to the home of a daughter, Mrs. C. E. Miller and family in Ranger, Texas, in the hope that the change would be beneficial. She became critically ill on Monday morning early, November 13, and was carried to the hospital in that city, where she passed away at 7:15 o'clock in the evening.
The funeral party arrived at the family home on Tuesday, but the memorial service honoring Mrs. Wylie was delayed; awaiting the arrival from California of a son, W. J. (Buddy) Wylie and wife. The service, conducted by Reverend Rucker and a minister of the Presbyterian church in Ranger, was held at the Exray Church edifice on Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. the Christian ceremonies were fitly commemorative of a life that had been "hidden in Christ", since the conversion of Mollie Fulfer at the age of twelve years, when she united with the Presbyterian church, Requiem music included the old-time religious songs that she had sung in worship services since childhood.
Close to the end of the day, the body of Mrs. Fulfer was laid to rest in the Exray cemetery, and serving in the sad duties of pallbearers were Ted Fulfer, Dean Wylie, Mike Davis, Bill Nachtigal, Joe Evans, and Andrew Luttrell. Carrying the massive floral offering and decorating the church altar for the service and afterward the grave where the beloved woman sleeps were Naomi Luttrell, Billie Lou Blue, Frances Venable, Paralee Maudin, Annie Fulfer, Irene Evans, Flora Young, Sue Fulfer.
A native of Texas, Mollie Fulfer, was born in Hunt county September 30, 1872. As a little child she came to the Exray community with her parents and her home was in that section until her translation to her home in Heaven. She was married to Andrew Kelsie Wylie January 8, 1890, and to them were born thirteen children, three of whom preceded her in death.
Survivors of Mrs. Wylie are her husband and the following sons and daughters, John Wylie, Lingleville, Richard Wylie, Exray; Henry Wylie, Hobbs, N. M. ; P. D. Wylie, Fort Worth; W. J. Wylie, Cotton, Calif; Victor Wylie, Exray; Kelsie Wylie, Dallas; cage Wylie, Troy; Mrs. C. E. Miller, Ranger; and Mrs. Rex Cates, Topeka, Kan. Her decedents number nineteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A tribune immeasurable in meaning is that her children and their families "rise up to call her blessed."
