IRAAN -- Verna Linna "Jack" Parker Dorris, died early Sunday morning surrounded by family and friends at the Iraan
General Hospital after a lengthy illness. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, at Restland Cemetery in
Iraan conducted by Mike Wright under the direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home. Mrs. Parker was one of twin daughters
born Dec. 9, 1910 on the family stock farm in the Bailey Ranch community, Schleicher County, to pioneer family William H.
and Mary Emily Thorp Parker. She was a resident of Iraan for 66 years, and has lived at the Iraan General Hospital for two
years. She graduated from Eldorado High School in 1929; attended North Texas State University and later graduated from Sul
Ross State University. She taught at Ozona from 1936-38, at Iraan from 1940-49 and again at Iraan from 1954-1974. "Jack" married
A.D. "Chick" Dorris June 4, 1938 in Eldorado. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iraan, and a 50-year member
of both Delta Kappa Gamma and Order of the Eastern Star. She was a past-matron of the Iraan OES chapter. She was preceded
in death by her husband, "Chick" Sept. 28, 1996 after 58 years of marriage. Other family members preceding her in death are
her parents, twin sister Velma Lela "Bill" Burleson, sister Mary Parker Davis, brothers Grady Parker and W.T. "Pete" Parker,
and nephew Howard G. Parker. Survivors include her brother, Glenn Parker of Eldorado; son, John Dean of Iraan; one grandson,
one great granddaughter and two step-great granddaughters of Midland; and several nephews, nieces and a host of friends.
