H.A. `POPS' CARAWAY JR.
H.A. ``Pops'' Caraway Jr. peacefully met his beloved wife, Toodle, who had been watching over him from heaven, Thursday,
Aug. 5, 1999.
Born March 31, 1929, in Hale Center, Texas to H.A. and Ora Caraway, H.A. enlisted in the United States Navy and served
during the Korean War.
Married to Toodle on April 21, 1952, they had three children, daughter, Laura, and sons, Trey and Andy.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 9, in Robert Massie Riverside Chapel with Miguel Zuniga, Church of Christ
minister, conducting services. Burial will follow in San Angelo at the Fairmount Cemetery with full military honors, by the
United States Navy Honor Guard stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base.
H.A. was a true entrepreneur having started many businesses and succeeding in most. He owned his own trucking company,
oil field service company and delivery service company. Known as a giving and honest person, he took care of his employees
and customers, putting their welfare ahead of his own. He gave freely, helping others in times of need, contributing to numerous
college scholarships for needy individuals and supporting the New Mexico Children's Home. From these activities he had a positive
impact on many young people's lives.
An extraordinary person, Dad, also known as ``Guindad'' to his grandchildren, was loved and will be missed by all who
knew him. Finally, H.A. and Toodle can pick up and continue the never-ending Scrabble game that was suspended when Toodle
left, on Dec. 19, 1998. Be assured H.A. will continue to question the validity of Toodle's controversial plays, except now
he has a higher authority than Webster's dictionary.
H.A. never met a stranger and was a believer in a good laugh and he always had an appropriate joke or comment for the
situation. He loved life and was never thwarted by life's problems. Failure was not in his vocabulary and he passed that wisdom
along to his children and grandchildren.
He was known by many and respected by all. H.A. was a talented man who had many interests. He collected gadgets and loved
to tinker with them. He loved to cook and was a gardener.
He is survived by a daughter, Laura Powell and husband, Dyron, of Houston; two sons, Trey Caraway and wife, Polly, of
San Angelo and Andy Caraway and wife, Cindi, of Merkel; grandchildren, Dyron Powell Jr. and wife, Sharla, Treyci Eyster and
husband, Joe, Treyla Caraway, Christopher Caraway, Bailey Browder, Kate Caraway, Kristin Caraway and Drew Caraway; nephew,
John Caraway Jr. and wife, Barbara; and sister-in-law, Anne Caraway. His faithful dog, Bugsy, was a partner and companion
after the loss of his beloved wife.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Toodle; a brother, John Caraway; and two sisters, Maxine Caraway and Imogene ``Frankie''
Ramage.
The family wishes to thank Shannon Medical Center, especially AirMed 1, the emergency room, 5 north and ICU for their
concern and loving care. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
