MIDLOTHIAN - Laverne H. "Slim" Gordon, 80, of Midlothian died Oct. 11.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Midlothian Funeral Home, 200 E. Ave. E. Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Midlothian, 800 S. 9th St., with Rev. Carl Freeto officiating. Masonic graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Hannibal Cemetery.

Mr. Gordon was born April 13, 1921, in Stephenville. He was retired from El Paso Natural Gas after 35 years in west Texas and southern New Mexico. He moved to Midlothian in 1986. He was frequently seen around town during his daily 10-mile bike ride. He was an usher for the United Methodist Church, a veteran of World War II and a Mason for almost 50 years.

He volunteered his time and labor to paint more than 100 street signs for the town of Midlothian. As a result, Oct. 26, 1989, was designated "Slim Gordon Week." Many organizations, such as Aggie Moms of Ellis County and the Midlothian Senior Citizens Center, as well as many young mothers, were all recipients of his love, either through his hand-made gifts, cakes and cookies or woodwork.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Inez Gordon; two sons Danny L. Gordon and wife Linda and Dickey R. Gordon and wife Mary; four grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Daisy Gordon, and brothers Billy Joe, Kenneth and Oscar Gene.
