Darrell Wilburn Elmore, 53, of Fort Worth was identified through fingerprint comparisons, an official with the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office said.
Af first, investigators thought the body was that of Teddy Wayne Chastain, who lived in the 4300 block of North Kings Circle. The body, which was found in the garage there, was so decomposed that physical identification was impossible, officials said.
But investigators discovered that Chastain, 43, had been in jail since May 17. He told police that on the previous day, he killed a man named Darrell inside his home.
Chastain said he shot Elmore when Elmore attacked him, police said. Elmore wasn't supposed to be in Chastain's house, the suspect told police, and Chastain believed that Elmore had taken some of his belongings.
Chastain is jailed on suspicion of murder and on an unrelated accusation of unlawfully carrying a weapon. Police said they expect Chastain to be charged with murder in Elmore's death this weekend.
